Oral History Interview with Ercument Atabay, undertaken by Gunder Varinlioglu on May 19, 2011, at Mr. Atabay’s apartment in Istanbul. Mr. Atabay was associated with people and projects in Istanbul that were sponsored by Dumbarton Oaks. The interview was conducted in Turkish, transcribed, and translated into English. English conventions are used in the translation. For example, the English honorifics “Mr.” and “Mrs.” that accompany the Turkish names are an approximation of the Turkish honorifics “Hanım” and “Bey.”

Donald Pumphrey

He became Assistant to the Superintendent of Buildings in 1983, Manager of Buildings in 1988, and Manager of Buildings and Security in 1991. He retired in 2008.

At Dumbarton Oaks, Oleg Grabar was a member of the Board of Scholars for Byzantine Studies (1972–1975) and a member of the Board of Senior Fellows of the Byzantine Studies Program (1978–1983). He was the son of the Byzantinist André Grabar (1896–1990), who at Dumbarton Oaks was Visiting Scholar (spring 1947), Henri Foçillon Scholar (1948–1949), Professor of Byzantine Art and Archaeology (1949–1954), Visiting Scholar (spring 1957), member of the Board of Scholars for Byzantine Studies (1957–1965), and Honorary Associate (1965–1991).
