In this bust-length image, Christ is shown blessing, his right arm caught in the sling of his mantle; in his left hand, he holds a Gospel Book (photo right). This well-known image most commonly fills the summit of the dome in Byzantine churches and is best known from mosaics and frescoes (photo below). It recalls the image of Christ introduced by Justinian II on his coins (click here and see Case III, Nos. 1–3).
