The standing figure of Christ is thought to have copied one of the most venerated icons of Constantinople, Christ Chalkites, a mosaic icon placed at the entrance to the Imperial Palace. Because of its location in the vestibule of the Palace, the image had potent imperial connotations. A rare image of Christ inscribed "Chalkites" is found in the Chora Monastery (Kariye Cami) in Constantinople (photo below and see Case III, No. 6).
