As the pre-existent Logos and the Incarnation of the Word, Christ was depicted as a frontal beardless youth with a high forehead, curly locks, a cross-halo and holding a scroll. An image of the youthful Christ was first introduced on coins by Justinian II after his restoration to the throne in the early 8th century (photo below), but it was not identified as "Emmanuel" until the 11th century (see Case III, No. 5).
