Representation of the Virgin
On the earlier solidus (photo right), the pagan personification of the city of Constantinople is seated frontally, her right foot on the prow of a ship; she holds a spear in her right hand and, in her left, a globe surmounted by a female Victory holding a wreath.

On the later coin (photo lower right), the Tyche of Constantinople faces to her right and holds the globe in her right hand, but the globe is now surmounted by a large cross, thereby rendering the image Christian.
