Work on the catalogues began in 1963. DOC 1 (1966), covering the years 491–602, was essentially the work of Alfred Bellinger, and it included some 4,000 coins. DOC 2 (photo middle right) and 3, by Philip Grierson, covering the periods 602–717 and 717–1081, respectively, appeared in 1968 and 1973, each in two parts. They included references to coins in other published collections that were not represented in the Dumbarton Oaks or the Whittemore collections and also attempted a more profound study of the coinage than had DOC 1. A third scholar, Michael F. Hendy (photo right), studied the complex coinage of the 12th and 13th centuries, on which he produced an authoritative monograph, Coinage and Money in the Byzantine Empire, 1081–1261 (1969). His formal catalogue of the Comnenian coins (1081–1261) appeared as DOC 4 (1999). Completing the series is DOC 5, on the Paleologan coins (1258–1453), written by Grierson, which was also published in 1999. Both DOC 4 and 5 appeared in two parts.

Excluded from the original catalogue series were the 950 coins of the 5th century. However, these were published in 1992 in the Catalogue of the Late Roman Coins, from Arcadius and Honorius to the accession of Anastasius I; this was written by Grierson and a younger colleague from Oxford University, Melinda Mays. Because its coins do not belong to what numismatists have come to regard as the "Byzantine" series, the volume does not form part of the numbered series of catalogues.

The publication of these catalogues has greatly contributed to the remarkable progress that has taken place in Byzantine numismatic scholarship over the past half century.
