The image of the Virgin orans, her raised hands outstretched in prayer, was known as the Blachernitissa and was named after the famous icon in the Blachernae Monastery in Constantinople in which it was housed. A half-length image appeared on the coins of Leo VI (click here), but the standard image associated with this epithet was a full-length standing figure of the Virgin (photos right and below, and see Case III, Nos. 15-17).
