The Virgin Nikopoios ("Maker of Victory") was another famous icon in the Blachernae monastery. This type appeared as early as the 6th century but acquired the epithet "Nikopoios" only in the 11th century. On coins of Basil II, the frontal bust-length Virgin holds a medallion with the Christ Child before her (photo below). The icon is said to have accompanied him into battle, ensuring his victory at Abydos (see Case III, Nos. 13, 14).
