The Virgin Enthroned is a type that dates back to the 6th century and becomes popular for apse compositions particularly in the medieval period (photo below). However, it does not become common on coins until the 12th century (photo upper right). Less common is the image of the Virgin Crowning the Emperor which appears on coins only in the 10th and 11th century (photo lower right and see Case III, Nos. 19, 20).
