The earliest representation of the Virgin on Byzantine coins occurred in the early 10th century, on a rare issue of Leo VI (886–912) (photo below). It was not until the 11th century, under Emperor Romanus III (1028–34), that representations of the Virgin become common on the coinage testifying to the great expansion of her cult at this time.
