Building Assistant

Function

Full time, including weekends: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performs daily cleaning chores in assigned area(s). This includes emptying trash, vacuuming floors, cleaning desktops and tables, dusting furniture, bookshelves and other surfaces.
  2. Checks lights in assigned area(s) daily and replaces burned out bulbs. Handles other light maintenance problems in assigned area(s).
  3. Damp mops and buffs tile floors three times per week.
  4. Performs heavy cleaning as necessary in assigned area(s) or as directed by supervisor; may include washing windows.
  5. Polish brass or silver when required.
  6. Cleans restrooms early in the morning and checks condition before museum collections open to the public at 2 p.m.
  7. Stands guard in galleries from 2-5 p.m. during museum opening hours. Answers questions from the public and gives directions to phone, restrooms, museum shop, etc.
  8. May relieve Security Officers occasionally. Helps with security coverage during lunch periods and during emergencies and staff shortages.
  9. Sets up and replaces furniture for concerts, lectures, receptions, etc.
  10. Handles catering/bartending duties during special events.
  11. Assists Refectory kitchen staff during staff shortages.
  12. May assist with distribution of mail.
  13. Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and ability to communicate in English required. Catering experience and cleaning experience, preferably in a museum, library or historic building necessary. Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position, including but not limited to the ability to move heavy furniture; stand for up to 3 consecutive hours; kneel, bend, stoop, and climb; and push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds. Must have the ability to work collegially in a team environment.

Compensation

Starting salary low- to mid-20s, depending on experience. 40-hour work week. Excellent benefits, including medical, dental and retirement plans and free parking or commuting subsidy.
