Chiseled on the wall to the left of the steps leading to the orchard from the pool, this verse comes from the poem "Reprieve," written by Joseph Auslander. A friend of the Blisses, this American poet and novelist was the first consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress, a position that evolved into poet laureate.
