Historical Note

Frederic Rhinelander King (1887–1972) was an architect who, beginning in 1919, shared an office in New York City with Marion Sims Wyeth (1889–1982), a friend from his student days in Paris. In 1934, they formalized the relationship and created the Wyeth and King partnership. William Royster Johnson joined Wyeth’s Palm Beach office as a draftsman in 1924. In 1944, he became a partner and the firm name was changed to Wyeth, King, and Johnson. King had studied at Harvard College, where he graduated in 1908, and then at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He worked in the New York City offices of McKim, Mead & White Architects until the beginning of the First World War. Between 1915 and 1917, he was associated with the architect Lawrence Grant White. Frederic King was Edith Wharton’s cousin and the executor of her American estate. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects since 1929 and a fellow since 1950. In 1960, Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss commissioned King to design a garden library with a first-floor rare book room at Dumbarton Oaks. The building was completed in 1963.
