Historical Note

George Hartman is an architect and principal emeritus of Hartman–Cox Architects, Washington, D.C., where until retirement he was a founding principal of the firm. He received his B.A. and M.F.A. in architecture from Princeton University. Hartman has taught at The Catholic University of America, North Carolina State University, and the University of Maryland, and has served on numerous juries and lectured extensively. He also was president of the American Institute of Architects’ Washington, D.C., chapter and has been a member of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the U.S. Department of State's Architectural Advisory Board of the Foreign Buildings Office. He is co-publisher of Academy Press. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and was a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome in 1996.

 

Scope and Content

The George E. Hartman architectural plans and drawings comprise material and copies of this material for the Byzantine Courtyard Gallery and associated basement spaces at Dumbarton Oaks undertaken between 1983 and 1987.
