Thomas Whittemore served as the American representative at excavations initiated by the British-run Egypt Exploration Society at Abydos in the early 1910s, which were directed by Edouard Naville. He also visited the site in the 1920s and early 1930s, when Henri Frankfort and J. D. S. Pendlebury served as field directors for the EES excavations.
