"This is the first complete history of ancient Mexico as far as it was known at that time and was the most complete edition of the work until modern times. Subsequent editions were bowdlerized due to Spanish authorities' negative reaction to what they considered the author's alleged hispanophobia and exaggeration of the value of Mexican culture to a point that Spain appeared to suffer by comparison."--viaLibri bookseller website.
"The Italian edition is the true first of Clavigero's fundamental work on Mexican history: he began the work in Spanish, but soon decided to start it again in Italian, and it was completed in its final form in that language. He was expelled with the other Jesuits from Mexico in 1767 and came to reside in Italy, and so it was that the work first saw the light in this Italian translation. The original text in Spanish became lost and was only found in the early 20th century. "--viaLibri bookseller website.
