Collections of the ICFA support the programs at Dumbarton Oaks, with the primary collecting focus thus far centered on Byzantine studies.
The Byzantine Photographs include black-and-white prints, color transparencies, slides, and negatives of Byzantine art, architecture, and archaeology from the fourth through the fifteenth century. The emphasis is on materials from Byzantium and neighboring cultures: Italy, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovenia, Romania, Russia, Armenia, and Georgia, as well as Greece, Syria, Israel, and Egypt. There is also a limited number of Russian, Crusader, and post-Byzantine works. Photographs are generally arranged by photographic format, medium, country, city, and site. There are a number of Byzantine Photograph collections. ICFA also houses the Index of Christian Art.
Authorization to use the collections held in ICFA should be requested using the same form used to request Reader status. E-mail the completed form to libraryaccess@doaks.org.
Approval to use ICFA collections does not confer automatic authorization to use the book and journal collections. Those wishing to use the book collections as well must schedule an orientation appointment with the appropriate subject librarian before access is granted. Please indicate this need on your application form.
The image collections and fieldwork archives may be consulted Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, please contact Gerrianne Schaad, Curator, Image Collections & Fieldwork Archives, at schaadg@doaks.org or 202-339-6973.
