It is a pleasure to introduce this electronic version of "The Burial Theme in Moche Iconography," by Christopher B. Donnan and Donna McClelland. Originally published in 1979, this volume of "Studies in Pre-Columbian Art & Archaeology," is now out of print in its paper form. We have thus taken the opportunity to make this important work available electronically. Although the quality of images is slightly less than in the original printed form, we hope that its greater accessibility through electronic media will make it welcome.

Twenty years have not diminished the importance of this volume. It was a landmark publication in extending the argument that Moche art was organized thematically. It remains essential reading for anyone interested in the art of Ancient America and continues to be widely cited with relevance to a number of issues beyond the specifics of the theme itself, such as gender studies, mortuary ritual, and prehistoric religion in general. Neither time nor age have dulled its relevance and importance for continuing studies of the past.

We hope you will enjoy this publication and find it useful. It is the first of many on our web site. Feel free to offer comments by sending them to:
