February 2 – January 5, 2014
2013 marks the fiftieth anniversaries of Dumbarton Oaks's Rare Book Reading Room and Pre-Columbian Collection Pavilion. Designed by Frederic Rhinelander King and Philip Johnson respectively, these two wings were constructed simultaneously between 1961 and 1963 but in two dramatically contrasting styles, one traditional and the other modern. This exhibition displays original drawings, photographs, and a model of these two buildings in order to demonstrate the details of these architectural contrasts as envisioned by Dumbarton Oaks under the patronage of Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss.
This exhibition is part of a year-long program of exhibitions and events to celebrate 50 Years of Pre-Columbian Art at Dumbarton Oaks.
