Fresco Icon with the Dormition of St. Ephrem the Syrian Hagios Nikolaos Anapafsas, Meteora, katholikon, north wall of the narthex, Theophanis Strelitzas Bathas, 1527 According to the synaxis of the Dormition of St. Ephrem, the scene takes place in the desert. Monks of different ranks gather around the saint's corpse on which an icon of Christ, of the Man of Sorrows type, has been placed. Some monks touch Ephrems body, others mourn over him. As funeral service required, the priest-monk censes the body of the saint at the end of the requiem mass, while the monk standing behind the body reads, Come and give the last kiss. |
