	Ring with the Dormition of the Virgin Gold intaglio: Constantinople, 11th century; ring: 16th century Dumbarton Oaks Collection, Washington, D.C. The oval intaglio depicts the Virgin lying on a bier surrounded by Christ (center) and apostles. The Dormition of the Virgin was carved in reverse in order to be used as a seal. Since the intaglio was a part of the ring, it also had a devotional purpose.
