Photo: Dumbarton Oaks

This scene depicts the saint’s funeral during which a miracle occurred. Dressed as a bishop, Basil lies on a funeral bier surrounded by a group of deacons. A priest on his left swings a censer. Another priest holds an open scroll, showing that a woman’s sins inscribed on it were miraculously erased when the scroll was placed on Basil’s body. During this scene, St. Basil is depicted with his eyes open.
