Fresco with the Funeral of Anna Dandolo Monastery of Sopocani, north wall of the narthex, 1265 This scene shows the royal funeral of Queen Anna, mother of King Uros I. She is shown dressed in imperial garments, wearing a crown over a white handkerchief. Her head is resting on a golden pillow. At her side are family members including her son, Uros I, and his wife, Helena, with their sons who mourn behind the funeral bier. A bishop with a censer is depicted at her feet. The scene also includes holy protectors, Christ and the Virgin, depicted on Annas left side. Behind is an angel holding Annas soul, similar to the scenes of the Dormition of the Virgin. |
