Death of St. Euthymios

Church of St. Demetrios, Thessaloniki, chapel of St. Euthymios, 1303 Photo: Sharon Gerstel

The preserved part of the scene (right) presents the body of the saint lying on a simple straw mat, with an icon of Christ placed on his chest. Grouped in a semicircle around St. Euthymios, monks express their sorrow by gesturing or bowing their heads. One monk, standing at the saint’s head, raises his face and hands, probably pointing toward heaven.
