Meister (1653-1713) traveled with the Dutch East India Company and his book includes observations on the Company's garden at the Cape of Good Hope. Meister's travels took him to Indonesia and Japan, where he studied flowers and plants. The economic value of plants -- such as coconut palm and durian -- is a regular theme.
