Few ancient cities on the metropolis level exhibit such a conspicuous discrepancy between an abundant literary tradition and a comparatively scanty archaeological history as Antioch-on-the-Orontes (today Antakya, Turkey). One of the foremost capitals of the Graeco-Roman world, this city has largely remained a closed book from a topographical and an archaeological point of view.
The lecture aims to provide an overview of the research since 1900, including the Franco-American expedition to Antioch and its vicinity between 1932 and 1939, initiated by Princeton University and the Musées Nationaux de France, and co-funded by several other institutions including Dumbarton Oaks. More recent research will be presented that covers the city’s foundation in the Hellenistic period until the Crusades.
