On February 27 and 28, Dumbarton Oaks hosted five PhD candidates from the Harvard University History Department. The students presented their research in medieval and Byzantine topics, toured the library, visited the collections, and had an opportunity to engage with Dumbarton Oaks’ curators, research librarians, and fellows. They also attended, with Director of Byzantine Studies Margaret Mullett, the Heaven and Earth exhibition at the National Gallery of Art.

“For our first-years, and particularly for our first-year Byzantinist, the visit was a revelation about the resources and opportunities at Dumbarton Oaks. For those of us returning, it was a wonderful chance to see old friends, tour the library, learn about current projects, get comments on our own work, and walk the gardens.” —Shane Bobrycki

“John Hanson (Assistant Curator, Byzantine Collection) gave several of us a rousing tour of the Byzantine collection and our experience at the National Gallery exhibit was heightened by Margaret's wise presence. It was terrific to see old faces and hear about the current and future projects in the Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library, Byzantine Studies, and Publications.” —Nathanael Aschenbrenner

“Through it all, I was awed not only by the opportunities and resources that abound at Dumbarton Oaks, but also by the warmth, expertise, and dedication of everyone we encountered there. As a first-year PhD student in Byzantine history, I had long heard that Dumbarton Oaks was an extraordinary place. Only now do I realize how extraordinary it truly is, and I am grateful to all the fellows and staff who made our visit possible.” —Jake Ransohoff
