DUMBARTON OAKS

2006-2007 PROJECT GRANTS

Dumbarton Oaks makes a limited number of grants to assist with scholarly projects in Byzantine Studies, Pre-Columbian Studies, and Garden and Landscape Studies. The normal range of awards is $3,000–$10,000. Support is generally for archaeological research, as well as for the recovery, recording, and analysis of materials that would otherwise be lost. Funding is typically awarded for transportation, meals, housing, vehicle rental, workmen’s wages, costs of technical analysis, etc.; grants are not normally made for the purchase of computers nor the salary of the principal investigator. Eligible projects may include, but are not limited to, the following:

—non-destructive survey and/or excavation of a site or a (Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, garden) component of a site. (In the case of a large excavation, the portion for which funding is requested from Dumbarton Oaks must be isolated or self-contained in some manner.)

—materials analysis of works of art and/or excavated materials.

—systematic campaign to survey or photograph monuments and objects that are at risk (e.g.,
architecture, gardens, paintings, mosaics, and sculptures in  situ, as well as objects that have
already been collected but are largely unrecorded and endangered).

Pre-Columbian project awards are intended only for the excavation of sites or the documentation and analysis of objects that are in imminent danger. Applicants should provide evidence that such sites or objects are under immediate threat.  Funds are not available for dissertation research.

Qualifications and Conditions: Project grants are limited to applicants holding a doctorate or the equivalent, and are awarded on the basis of 1) ability and preparation of the principal project personnel (including knowledge of the requisite languages) and 2) interest and value of the project to the specific field of study. Applications are reviewed by a committee of scholars in the relevant field.  Awards are made for projects conducted within the 2007 fiscal year (July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007). Before applying, applicants must contact the appropriate Director of Studies, no later than October 1, 2005, to determine if the project is within the purview of Dumbarton Oaks.

Project awards are not offered purely for the purpose of travel, nor for work associated with a degree, for library or archive research, for catalogues, or for conservation and restoration per se. When projects involve photography, Dumbarton Oaks reserves the right to request that successful applicants allow the institution to purchase copies of the photographs at cost. Upon completion of their projects, Byzantine project grant recipients may also be asked to submit brief reports of their work for publication in Dumbarton Oaks Papers.

Application Procedure: Send ten complete, collated sets of the following three items to Dumbarton Oaksby November 1. Applicant’s name must be typed at the top of each sheet.

1. Application letter. Specify the title of the project and the period during which the work will be conducted. Include names and addresses of the three scholars who are to send letters of recommendation directly to Dumbarton Oaks (see below).

2. Proposal. Briefly describe (1,000 words maximum) the project. Indicate any progress already made and explain how the project will contribute to the relevant field of study. Include a detailed budget and timetable. List all applications to other granting agencies, whether for the same project, or for projects that are related to the research proposed to Dumbarton Oaks. Specify amounts requested from each agency.

3. Personal and professional data. For the principal project personnel, list: a) address, telephone number(s), and fax and e-mail if available; b) education and academic degrees with dates conferred, awards, and honors; c) present and past positions; d) publications, papers read, and field research (do not send publications unless requested); e) level of proficiency in all the requisite languages of the field (ancient, medieval, and modern).

Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must have three scholars write by November 1 directly to  Dumbarton Oaks commenting on the qualifications of the principal project personnel and the interest and value of the project to the specific field of study. Letters beyond the three required will not be considered.

Applications (ten complete and collated sets) must be postmarked by November 1, 2005. Late applications will be returned. Awards will be announced in February 2006. Please send all required materials to:
