Imagining the Empress: Theodora in Popular Culture, 1882-1922
April-October 2017
The Empress Theodora appeared many times in popular culture. She was propelled to fame in the late nineteenth century in large part by the reputation of stage actress Sarah Bernhardt, who took on the role of the empress in Victorien Sardou’s play, Théodora in 1884. This postcard, printed in 1885, features Bernhardt in an imperial costume as photographed by Napoleon Sarony.
