Dumbarton Oaks Studies in Pre-Columbian Art and Archaeology
Sandals From Coahuila Caves
Walter W. Taylor

The lowly sandal is emblematic of the way in which archaeology’s focus on the study of past human behavior and art history's focus on objects may come together. Taylor likely would never have considered himself as conducting a project in art history, and some art historians might not consider sandals as worthy objects of study. Nonetheless, this work represents a major contribution to our understanding of the prehistory of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Careful research on objects as simple as sandals can elucidate a wealth of information on these objects and the people who used them.
