Royall Tyler to Mildred Barnes Bliss, May 9, 1929

41, Bishopsgate,
London, E.C.2.
9.V.29Thursday.

Dearest Mildred,

This is a pretty good carpet—in almost flawless condition, and very good in colour, the gold yellow border particularly attractive. It is expected to fetch about £5,000. It isn’t a supreme thing, not of the finest quality and is, I expect, rightly described as Indo-Persian.A seventeenth-century Indo-Persian carpet that the Shah of Persia had given to Empress Maria Theresa. See Catalogue of Fine Early German Stained Glass (London: Sotheby and Co., May 16, 1929.

It’s to be sold on May 16th.

My plans are as I reported in my last—arriving in Paris May 15th 11. p.m. and staying till the 18th, 19.h 45

Much love
R. T.

Later. I’ve just seen some very good little Romanesque sculpture at Sotheby’s sale tomorrow—and I may buy you one or two, if they escape the eye of the big dealers.
