Sainte-Claire le Château

Hyères (Var)

December 27th 1937

Dearest Mildred,

The lawyers who are acting for the Executors of Edith’s will have come to the conclusion that my presence in New York would facilitate the settlement of a matter now pending.

So I am taking the first boat where I can find accommodation, and it may be the Washington,SS Washington, a luxury liner of the United States Lines that first went into service in 1933. sailing on Thursday, 30th.

I shall let you know as soon as I arrive in New York. I hope to stay long enough to see you and Robert! But I shall have to hurry back, as I have not shown my face in Budapest since the end of May, and now, Royall feels it isn’t possible for me to be away much longer.

I am very sorry that I have not been able to have Sainte Claire “measured”—but I travelled all night to arrive down here on the morning of Xmas Eve, and tomorrow evening I have to take the train back to Paris—Xmas Day. Sunday and today have all been holidays.

My very best love and happiest wishes for the New Year—to you and to dear Robert.

Yours ever devotedly

Elisina
