Royall Tyler to Robert Woods Bliss, December 4, 1949

Beyrouth, 4 Dec. 49

Dear Robert.

Here are photos of the gold findBZ.1950.36, BZ.1950.37, and BZ.1950.38. I wrote about two days ago,See letter of December 2, 1949 [2]. and also of a glass jug:BZ.1950.34. the only Christian one in a huge collection of antique glass BustrosElias (Elie) Bustros, an antiquities dealer in Beirut, Lebanon. possesses. It is intact, and of a pearly iridescence. Besides the croix pattéeCross pattée, a type of cross that has arms narrow at the center and broader at the perimeter. on a globe, on the face shown on the photo. there’s another (not photoed) with a croix pattée on a four staffed altar. BElias (Elie) Bustros, an antiquities dealer in Beirut, Lebanon. wants $600. for it.

The photo of the braceletBZ.1950.37. (broken) to which the intact pseudo-medallion is attached, is blurred. There is a vine scroll, with leaves & clusters of grapes, & at least two kinds of birds.

It’s now (apparently) decided that I leave for Cairo with ClappGordon R. Clapp (1906–1963), an American authority on public administration and chairman of the Tennessee Valley Administration (1946–1954). on Dec. 9. We are due to arrive in Paris on Dec. 16.

It’s a mad rush, these last days.

I’ve bought the little enameled bronze lampBZ.1950.19. (the one Brummer wanted)See letter of November 21, 1949. and will bring it along.

Much love both of you.

Yrs

R.T.

P.T.O “Please turn over.”

BustrosElias (Elie) Bustros, an antiquities dealer in Beirut, Lebanon. postal-cable add. is simply Elie Bustros, Beyrouth.

I do hope that, somehow or other, that capitalBZ.1950.24. with the angels’ busts will be secured for D.O.

And I also think that the bronze findBZ.1950.25, BZ.1950.26–27, BZ.1950.28, BZ.1950.29, BZ.1950.30, BZ.1950.32, and BZ.1950.33. would be worth getting, whole. Its Syrian provenance makes it especially interesting.
