Louis Bréhier (1868–1951)

Louis René Bréhier was a medievalist historian who specialized in Romanesque and Byzantine sculpture and Byzantine iconography. Born in Brest, France, on August 5, 1868, he studied history and literature at the University of Paris, where one of his professors was the Byzantine historian Charles Diehl. Bréhier was professor of ancient and medieval history at the University of Clermont-Ferrand between 1899 and 1938. He authored several studies of Byzantine art and history. Bréhier died on October 13, 1951.
