Joseph Duveen (1869–1939)

Sir Joseph Duveen, 1st Baron Duveen, was a highly influential art and antiques dealer in the Duveen Brothers firm, which had a main showroom in London and branches in Paris and New York. Duveen was born on October 14, 1869, in England into a family of Dutch-Jewish importers. With the death of his father in 1909, Duveen became head of the business and began to specialize in the sale of Old Master paintings, the attributions for which were often provided by Bernard Berenson. Joseph Duveen died in London on May 25, 1939. The firm’s archives are now at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.
