Lyulph Howard (1885–1915)

Lyulph Walter Mowbray Howard (nicknamed "Dummer") was born on November 21, 1885. He met and became good friends with Royall Tyler at Harrow School. Howard attended Oxford University and took part in Horace Cole’s Sultan of Zanzibar hoax on March 2, 1905, playing the part of Henry Lucas, the interpreter. He traveled in Spain with Royall Tyler in the summer of 1905, then studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, living with Royall Tyler, in 1907–1908. Howard stood as godfather (with Mildred Barnes Bliss as godmother) to Royall Tyler’s son, William Royall Tyler, in 1910. Howard was killed in action near Arras, France, on September 15, 1915, during the First World War.
