Elisina Tyler to Mildred Barnes Bliss, March 20, 1914

Paris.

March 20th 1914Friday.

Dearest Mildred,

RocchlinRocchlin has not been identified. See letter of March 19, 1914. had the evil inspiration, he says, to engage himself for Tuesday next. Therefore, poor pet, you will be free to go to bed. I enclose the handkerchief you so kindly and opportunely lent me.

I have just seen two companies of some cavalry regiment go by. I hope there won’t be too much fuss. What a blunderbuss of a woman! On March 16, 1914, Henriette Caillaux (1874–1943), a Parisian socialite and second wife of the prime minister of France, Joseph Caillaux (1863–1944), with whom she had an affair while he was married to his first wife, shot and killed Gaston Calmette (1858–1914), the editor of the newspaper Le Figaro, who had received love letters written by Caillaux to Henriette before they were married and threatened to publish them. There was fear that there would be a civil disturbance because of the murder. See “France Remains Calm. Imminence of Elections and King George’s Visit Keep Things Quiet,” New York Times, March 29, 1914.

Dummer passed rapidly through Paris on his way to Italy yesterday. He wished me to present his compliments to you, and he asked if you had been told how he left his cards on you. I replied tactfully that you were quite aware it was an act that cost him trouble.

Bless you, dear Mildred.

Yours ever

Elisina.
