Drawing by Paul A. Underwood. MS.BZ.019-03-01-048.
In this plan, Underwood demonstrates how the side bays of the building are developed out of the four half arches springing from the four-legged piers of the central bay, according to the text by Constantine the Rhodian. The whole vault is formed by the half-arches meeting, or “clasping with their fingers,” at the crown. The drawing also visually translates the description from the Rhodian’s text, of the Holy Apostles as a “five-fold house bearing the honored figure of the cross.”
