The Crazannes Quarries by Bernard Lassus

An Essay Analyzing the Creation of a Landscape

Michel Conan

Dumbarton Oaks Contemporary Landscape Series

Art, Contemporary Landscape Architecture, Garden and Landscape Studies

The unexpected discovery of very ancient quarries, still buried under tons of rubble, in the path of a motorway under construction in western France suggested the possibility of transforming them into Land Art. Bernard Lassus’s creative process provides a wonderful opportunity for close observation, illustrated by his own photographs and drawings, of his landscape design approach which is opening new directions for landscape design beyond the motorways. Conan uses this to show an artist calling on his life experiences and his understanding of the ethical and esthetic issues of landscape design to create a stunning landscape.
