“The book will immediately, I am sure, become an essential reference work for these interesting objects which . . . play much the same role for silver sculpture that the consular diptychs do with ivory in providing a large series of dated monuments in the early Christian period." Marion Lawrence, Speculum

The volume is divided into three parts: Part I presents and classification and analysis of the stamps and explains the method of dating. Part II explores the type of organization that applied them, and takes up the question of provenance. Following this is an excursus by J. P. C. Kent on the comes sacrarum largitionum. Finally, there is a descriptive catalogue of 103 pieces of silver dating to the period 400–700.
