The Mother of God seated on a throne, holding the Child in her lap. Sigla preserved at left: ̅: Μή(τη)ρ [Θ(εο)ῦ]. Line border.

Reverse

Inscription of five lines, a cross above. Border of dots.

Translation

Μαρία πορφυρογέννητος ἡ Κομνηνή.

Maria Komnene, born in the purple.

Commentary

The owner of this seal was Maria Komnene (1152-1182), the eldest daughter of the emperor Manuel Komnenos.
