Commentary
In his unpublished catalogue of the Shaw Collection, Laurent identified the imperial bust on this seal as that of Constans II. On gold coins issued during the first five years of his reign (for example, DOC 2.2:1f.2; MIB 3: Prägetabelle 5, nos. 1–8) Constans II is shown without a beard and with facial features that closely resemble the figure depicted on this seal.
