Θεοτόκε σκέποις με Κασταμονίτην

Translation

Θεοτόκε σκέποις με Κασταμονίτην.

Mother of God, may you protect me, Kastamonites.

Commentary

Dodecasyllabic. This is also one of the rare Byzantine seals depicting a narrative scene.

The reading is provisional. There appears to have been a line at the top the reverse, which is now missing. The restoration "Θεοτόκε σκέποις" (a formula found in Wassiliou-Seibt, Siegel mit metrischen Legenden I, nos. 921-926, to which this seal should be added) seems to be the most plausible one, although until a better preserved parallel becomes known it cannot be established with certainty.
