(Seal of) Stephanos apo hypaton, patrikios, stratiotikos logothetes and general kommerkiarios of the apotheke of Paphlagonia.

Commentary

The date is provided by the identification of the emperors, whose portraits are known from coins. The present specimen must be placed late in the period 659-668 because (a) Stephanos had in the meantime added the title apo hypaton to that of patrikios (career outlined by Zacos-Veglery, 145, table 1) and (b) because emperor Constans is represented wearing a helmet, a headpiece that appears on coins usually dated after 663 (Grierson, Catalogue II/2, 434).
