Bust of St. Demetrios holding spear and shield. Traces of vertical inscription at r.: ΗΟ: ἅγιος Δημήτριος. Remnants of circular inscription along border of dots.

Translation

Κύριε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Θεοφάνει μητροπολίτῃ Θεσαλονίκης καὶ συγκέλλῳ.

Lord, help your servant Theophanes metropolitan Thessalonica and synkellos.

Commentary

Only one Theophanes is mentioned in the Synodikon of Thessalonica (Gouillard, Synodikon, 114); he became metropolitan before 1031 and was deposed in special circumstances by the emperor in 1038 (cf. EO 5 [1901-2] 26). Our seal informs us that he had also become a synkellos.
