Commentary

Poimaneon is identified with Eski Manyas, on the road leading to the south of Kyzikos. Its first known bishop, a suffragan of Kyzikos, appears at the Council of Chalcedon in 451; the see is mentioned in all notitiae until the thirteenth century as (τὸ) ποιμανηνόν, but the plural form indicating the inhabitants, οἱ Παιμανηνοί, is attested since antiquity by several sources. See Laurent, Corpus V/2, 435; ODB III, 1690-91; F.M. Kaufmann - J. Stauber, "Poimanenon bei Eski Manyas? Zeugnisse und Lokalisierung einer kaum bekannten Stadt," Studien zum antiken Kleinasien II [Asia Minor Studien 8] (Bonn, 1992), 43-85.
