Obverse

Bust of St. Nicholas blessing with his right hand and holding a book in his left hand. On either side the inscription: |ν|ι-κ|ο|λ : ὁ ἅ(γιος) Νικόλ(αος). Border of dots.

Reverse

Inscription of four lines, preceded by a decoration. Border of dots.

Νικήτ(ᾳ) (μον)αχ(ῷ), ἐπησκ(ό)πο τῆς Ἀσσοῦ.

Translation

Νικήτᾳ μοναχῷ, ἐπησκόπο τῆς Ἀσσοῦ.

Niketas, monk (and) bishop of Assos.

Commentary

Assos (modern Bahramköy, in southern Troas) was a suffragan bishopric of Ephesos, appearing in all notitiae; its bishops are attested from 431 to 1229. See Laurent, Corpus V/1, 194; Culerrier, Suffragants d'Ephèse, 154 (episcopal list); Zgusta, 104.
