Commentary

The reading of the name is based on this seal's better preserved parallel, BZS.1958.106.1659, listed below. Stavrakos (Die byzantinischen Bleisiegel, p. 194) and Jordanov (Corpus II, p. 191) list other seals bearing the name John Karianites, however, it is difficult to determine whether these groups belonged to the same person.
