Under the artistic direction of Matthias Maute and Sophie Larivière, this award-winning ensemble of strings, flutes, recorders, guitar, percussion, and double bass has crafted a unique program called Vivaldi and the Baroque Gypsies. Dazzling concertos by Vivaldi are interspersed with freshly realized selections from an 18th-century Eastern European collection of tuneful gypsy music that was likely known to, and may have influenced, the popular Italian composer. Program

The gifted Israeli cellist, who has moved audiences worldwide with his profound artistry and the tonal beauty of his playing, collaborates with the critically acclaimed pianist Noreen Cassidy-Polera in a program of works by Robert Schumann, Frederic Chopin, François Couperin, and Mark Kopytman. Program

This popular ensemble returns to the Music Room with a holiday program unlike any other: The Sacred Bridge: Music of Three Faiths; Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Medieval Europe. Through music, the common roots of the great monotheistic religions are revealed in an evening that includes elements of Jewish liturgy, Gregorian chant, song and texts of Jewish minstrels, Sephardic folksong, medieval Spanish Cantigas, and Judaeo-Arabic music from the ancient Andalusian tradition. The Boston Camerata musicians are joined by members of the Sharq Arabic Music Ensemble. Program

The young artists Stephanie Ho and Saar Ahuvia share the Music Room piano bench to offer a memorable evening of virtuosic piano four-hands music by J.S. Bach, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, and Igor Stravinsky, concluding with a spectacular rendition of selections from Felix Mendelssohn’s own transcription of his delightful Midsummer Night’s Dream.

This brilliant Mexican ensemble presents a two-part evening that begins with rarely heard string quartets from Mexico, Brazil, and Uruguay, and ends with sensuous tangos from Argentina, when the quartet is joined by Daniel Binelli, a master of the bandoneón. Binelli worked closely with the celebrated composer Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992), and was a member of the composer's New Tango Sextet. The evening offers music by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Javier Alvarez, Miguel del Aguila, Astor Piazzolla, and Binelli.

Celebrating its 65th anniversary year, this distinguished ensemble has toured regularly worldwide and recorded more than two hundred works, which have garnered numerous awards. The ensemble performs a stunning program of beloved classics from the string quartet repertoire, including works by Mozart, Saint-Saëns, and Schumann.

This self-conducted group of seventeen young musicians made its Washington, DC debut last season right here at Dumbarton Oaks. We were so impressed by their musicianship, energy, and freshness, that we immediately invited them to play for us again this season. Their stunning performances of music by Heinrich Biber, Ludwig van Beethoven, Osvaldo Golijov, and Benjamin Britten promise to delight even the most seasoned concertgoer.

Four Seasons of Flowers is an illustrated volume that presents a selection of the manuscripts, herbals, and printed botanical texts from the Rare Book Collection at Dumbarton Oaks. Representing pivotal works in the intellectual history of Europe from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, these drawings, books, and manuscripts are among the most significant materials conserved in the Rare Book Reading Room. They offer an illuminating overview of the history of botany as a modern science, from its inception to the present day. Each text is accompanied by a remarkable set of botanical illustrations. Their scientific accuracy and aesthetic beauty testify to the importance of the visual image once the efficacy of the printing press as an instrument for the furtherance of knowledge in the sciences and technology—from anatomy to zoology and from astronomy to botany—had been fully recognized. Botanical illustrations constitute an indispensable source of information for historians of not only botanical sciences but also garden and landscape architecture, thus shedding light on the study of plants in different periods, as well as on the evolution of the visual arts in areas where the representation of the plant world played a central role.

In 2011, the Garden and Landscape Studies program at Dumbarton Oaks conducted a survey of its former Fellows and grant recipients. The aim of this initiative was to evaluate the impact of this program on their careers and academic development in order to assess its broader role in shaping the field of garden and landscape studies over the first 40 years of this program’s history. We received 71 responses from scholars working in different disciplines, including art and architectural history, landscape architecture, geography, anthropology, languages, environmental studies, and classics. The principal outcome of this survey is an extensive list of scholarly publications, which were produced or substantially advanced during the fellowship period, inspired by the time spent at Dumbarton Oaks, or supported by Dumbarton Oaks project grants. The first preliminary version of this bibliography, which will be regularly updated, is available here.

The Dumbarton Oaks Gardens film was "re-discovered" in early 2011 when ICFA staff learned that three (3) film reels in cold storage contained footage of the Dumbarton Oaks Gardens. ICFA staff assessed and inspected the entire 16mm film collection at the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center of the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Human Studies Film Archives. During inspection, ICFA staff determined that most of the films had started to suffer from vinegar syndrome, a common type of deterioration with acetate (or safety) films. The gardens film, along with the other 16mm films from the Byzantine Institute, were sent to Colorlab to be digitized and re-formatted for preservation in October 2011.

Based on the film edge codes, clothing, and garden scenes, sections of the film can be dated to the mid-1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. The combined footage illustrates Dumbarton Oaks when it was still a private residence, as well as when it became an institute of Harvard University in 1940. Under the direction of Thomas Whittemore until 1950 and Paul Underwood from 1950 to 1959, the Byzantine Institute cleaned some of the finest examples of mosaics and frescoes in Byzantine art, which were located in the naos, esonarthex and exonarthex, as well as in the parekklesion, at Kariye Camii.

This film generally documents the cleaning, restoration, and conservation of the mosaics in the exonarthex. It also illustrates Thomas Whittemore and the Byzantine Institute staff in action.
