Ancient Art at Dumbarton Oaks

February 2020–July 2021 | Viewed alongside Byzantine art, these objects from the ancient Mediterranean offer an opportunity to consider the continuities and changes in artistic production from the classical to medieval periods.

Art from the ancient Mediterranean represents a small but significant part of Dumbarton Oaks’ collections. The works were acquired to complete the collection’s documentation of the history of artistic styles, techniques, and iconographies. When viewed alongside Byzantine art, they offer an opportunity to consider the continuities and changes in artistic production from the classical to medieval periods.

The reinstallation and online exhibition have been coordinated by Elizabeth Dospel Williams, Associate Curator, Byzantine Collection, and Kelsey Eldridge, Tyler Fellow (2019–2021), Department of History of Art and Architecture, Harvard University.
